The 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES CoP17) took place in Johannesburg, South Africa from 23 September to 4 October 2016 at the Sandton Convention Center.
Attended by more than 3,000 participants from the around the world, the event has been hailed as the largest wildlife conference in CITES history. A platform for conservationists the world over on matters relating to all wildlife, the CITES Cop17 was hosted, organized, and administered by the CITES Secretariat in collaboration with the South African Department of Environmental Affairs.
The work of the African Elephant Fund (AEF) and the activities of the African Elephant Action Plan (AEAP) were exhibited during the conference. AEF branded materials and informational pamphlets were distributed, and a side event was held on 4 October 2016.
The AEF side event, The Elephant in the Room: A Coherent Approach to the Implementation of the African Elephant Action Plan centered on the activities of the African elephant range State projects funded by the AEF on their implementation on the AEAP.
